Leslie Brooke’s humorous pictures have added another dimension to these old tales and have given this volume its deserved popularity with young children-and their parents.
The funny happenings constantly going on in the background of all his pictures intrigue and delight children.
This wonderful example of the work of one of this century’s finest children’s book artists deserves a place on every nursery bookshelf. It contains 32 full-page colour illustrations and numerous black-and-white drawings.

L. Leslie Brooke used to tell people the three things he most enjoyed were children, books, and gardens- and so he filled his many books with spirited children and lovely gardens.
Perhaps the best known are Johnny Crow’s Garden and Johnny Crow’s Party which he wrote and illustrated for his sons. Years later-, he created Johnny Crow’s New Garden for his grandson.
Leonard Leslie Brooke was born on September 24, 1862. He studied at the Royal Academy in London, and earned his reputation as a portrait painter before producing his first book for children in 1897- The Nursery Rhyme Book edited by Andrew Lang.
